Product Description

Review

"Flanagan is a sparkling writer, leavening rigorous philosophical exposition with intimate personal disclosures, vivid examples, and humor. The Problem of the Soul is a pleasure to read."

Product Description

The illusions we must give up--concerning free will, personal identity, and the existence of the soul--and the (surprisingly rich) ideas we can keep. Traditional ideas about the basic nature of humanity are under attack as never before. The very attributes that make us human--free will, the permanence of personal identity, the existence of the soul--are being undermined and threatened by the current revolution in the science of the mind. If the mind is the brain, and therefore a physical object subject to deterministic laws, how can we have free will? If most of our thoughts and impulses are unconscious, how can we be morally responsible for what we do? The Problem of the Soul shows the way out of these seemingly intractable paradoxes. Framing the conflict in terms of two dominant visions of the mind--the "manifest image" of humanistic philosophy and theology, and the scientific image--renowned philosopher Owen Flanagan demonstrates that there is, in fact, common ground, and that we need not give up our ideas of moral responsibility and personal freedom in order to have an empirically sound view of the human mind.

3.0 out of 5 stars a help towards collapsing hubris, 5 Nov 2003
By selfconscious (Las Vegas, Nevada USA) - See all my reviews
The author's mantra oft repeated is "we're animals through and through". For many individuals, this is a tired phrase learned in youth. For others, it remains to be learned, and it is for these latter individuals the book was apparently written.

If you feel in need of being convinced that humans are a kind of animal, then by all means purchase this book.

4.0 out of 5 stars Soul-destroying!, 5 Jun 2009
By D. Smith (Scotland) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
A kindly and erudite philosophy professor shoots down everyday notions of free will and of immutable and immaterial souls. He doesn't stop short at scepticism, however, but also suggests what it is reasonable to believe about voluntary behaviour, the nature of persons, and so forth. I was particularly drawn by his treatment of morality as a form of ecology.

For those with an interest in such topics, this is a cogent, well-informed and well-written text that is not too technical for the general reader.
