I bought a copy of this last spring, to help me in studying John Skelton. Skelton is, to my mind, an often overlooked and underrated poet and his verse, for all its apparent disorder, is energetic, dramatic, frequently scathing and often hilarious. This book has only avoided a 1* rating by managing to make Skelton more accessible to a casual audience, and by going some tiny way towards filling the current void in Skelton in print. And it's cheap. Otherwise, its infuriating omissions and peculiar approach to regularized spelling make this more a hindrance than a help to anyone who is remotely serious about reading Skelton. A trip to the library for the Scattergood edition remains the best bet.So, if you're new to Skelton, or mildly interested, or just happen to have a [few] coins that won't fit into your wallet, this is a fair purchase and an easy way into a challenging and rewarding poet. Otherwise, leave it on the shelf. That's where I leave my copy.
