This review is from: A Rough Shoot (Paperback)
Geoffrey Household is, of course, best known for his classic 'Rogue Male' (1939). Soon after writing that, Household joined British intelligence and travelled widely for that august organisation; after the war, he settled down as a country gentleman and started writing again. This was one of his first thrillers, a bit in the vein of Rogue Male and Buchan country chase thrillers. Household has a style all his own, however, and I think I'd be able to reconize his distinctive writing style very soon. He died in 1988.

A Rough Shoot plays in autumnal Dorset, where colonel-turned-quarry agent Taine surprises two suspicious characters on some remote farmland. A confrontation leads to international intrigue, chases across Dorset, suspect right-wing parties, metings with cavalry generals, evading the police... it is a full and satisfying thriller.

Later on, I think, Household hits his stride even better and Olura, Red Anger, and The last two weeks of Georges Rivac are as good as rogue male. But for the aficionado, Rough Shoot is good fodder, too!
