1.0 out of 5 stars Disappointing, 13 Nov 2006
By R. Creasy (North Lincs) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
This review is from: Worlds That Weren't (Paperback)
I do like Alternate Histories but this was a very disappointing book. I assume that for most the enjoyment is in visualising what could have been had something not followed the path which we all know yet in this collection only Steve Stirling's work can be said to reflect such an approach. Maybe the real problem is in my historical knowledge but in the three works other than Stirling's there is never a sense of consequence which should be the hallmark of Alternate History. maybe there is a giveaway in that each story comes with an afterword explaing the context and genesis but if such a device is necessary then I am led to think that the author went wrong somewhere. Overall then, for me, this was a disappointing collection. I would suggest that the reader who wants excitement without real depth stick to Stirling's or Turtledove's novels, the reader who wants depth also would be best directed to the What If collections. This book falls between the two and leaves one looking for something a little more solid.
