3.0 out of 5 stars A good book for younger readers, 16 Aug 2000
By Clea Neil "Aberdeen" (Aberdeen, Scotland UK United Kingdom) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
Rani Trader's family has bought her an apprenticeship in the Glasswright's Guild, sacrificing virtually all of their savings so their daughter (and themselves, by proxy) can move up in this world where class and guild is all important. Unfortunately she's in the wrong place at the wrong time, and is accused of murder and treachery of the highest order...

A good mystery and interesting culture are lessened by a character who's just a little too clueless at times. Of course she's only 11 or 12 until the very end of the book, but nevertheless I found her a bit too young for my tastes. It is, however, an enjoyable read, and I hope Klasky writes with older characters inher next book.

5.0 out of 5 stars Surprisingly good fantasy, 1 Jun 2005
By A. Wasenczuk "speedbird2" (Hampshire, UK) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
At first sight this seems a typically weak fantasy premise: how is an apprentice to an ancient decorative trade going to save the world with her craft? In the end, however, it seems just a device to produce an odd title and an elegant mystery, for which we can respect it.

Rather, Klasky has created quite an interesting world for her young heroine, founded on trade, religion, and the oldest kind of magic. The protagonist is placed on the cusp of adulthood, and this device is exploited well - Rani's journey is the kind to make one remember that we all feel like children in an inexplicable adult world from time to time. She is pulled headlong into a linear story where no sooner does one thing look certain than it is swept away and forgotten to be replaced by something even more bizarre. But don't worry: this isn't too heretical a plot structure - there is eventually a kind of recapitulation, and one clever enough to make you want to re-read the whole thing.

I found this easy to read very quickly. And it's a pleasant change to see a fantasy series with a self-contained story in the first book. I just hope the sequels don't spoil the sense of closure.
