Product Description

Amazon.co.uk Review

In Smoke Screen Kyle Mills produces a deliciously sly fantasy on what would happen if the tobacco industry saw sense. His hero, Trevor, is a thirtysomething trustafarian whose eventual wealth depends on his staying part of the family firm--an integral part of Big Tobacco. His capacity for useful candour gets him promoted to a senior PR job at just the point where a maverick CEO tries to blackmail the US government and people by shutting down the entire tobacco industry--to demonstrate that multi-billion lawsuits and endless regulation aside, America cannot do without tobacco. Trevor, though, has a different agenda--presumably Mills' own--which is to bring common sense and humanity to the debate; he also wants to hang onto his personal wealth and get the woman he loves--which is harder than it sounds, since she is an anti-smoking advocacy lawyer.

At times, this is a talky book, and has some slightly artificial melodrama about Serbian tobacco smugglers; Trevor is an attractive and entertaining advocate for his political positions and Mills manages to involve us in all the political and boardroom chicanery that his charm and honesty cut through like a cigar clipper. --Roz Kaveney --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.

5.0 out of 5 stars Another educational and gripping tale from Kyle Mills, 28 Nov 2004
This review is from: Smoke Screen (Paperback)
Having just discovered Kyle Mills, I have to say that I find it so refreshing to read a novel that keeps me up till late, and poses some real ethical questions at the same time.

While Mark Beamon is not part of this novel, Kyle Mills creates another set of brilliant characters. The hero of the piece, Trevor, is as likeable as they come, providing many a laugh on the way.

The book provides a real insight into the tabacco industry, again creating a moral dilemma that really makes you think.

My whole family are hooked on Kyle Mills' books, and I would highly recommend this book to anyone. Its not often that you find such intelligent and well written books.

2.0 out of 5 stars Not convinced, 15 Jan 2010
By J. D. Mcintosh (Scotland) - See all my reviews

This came recommended as a thriller about the tobacco industry and the machinations within it. I found it neither thrilling nor informative about tobacco.

Our hero zoomed about in the back of cars while pursuing a Mills and Boon type romance with a hippie chick from the "other side".

We saw them rescued from Serbian assassins by an SAS man and then he was engaged in an attack on a Serbian boat. Don't ask me to explain.

The whole shebang seemed to be taking place in a bubble though it dealt with huge health and commercial issues affecting the USA.

We were expected to believe that the nation's frantic smokers were unable to obtain fags from any source other than Terra.

While Mr Mills undoubtedly writes fluently, I feel he is weak on character and on painting a broad picture.

Has it been turned into a film? It might work.

4.0 out of 5 stars A delicious satire, 1 Mar 2005

Not really a thriller, more a black comedy that mercilessly satirises the world of big tobacco and the anti-smoking lobby. Endlessly fascinating and often hilarious, Mills takes no prisoners, only slightly letting the side down with a cop-out ending.
