5.0 out of 5 stars Just What the Doctor Ordered, 29 Sep 2003
By Mark Baker (Santa Clarita, CA United States) - See all my reviews
(TOP 50 REVIEWER)    (REAL NAME)
When LAPD chief John Masters approaches Mark Sloan about serving on a committee to look into unsolved crimes, Mark is surprised. Sure, he has a great reputation for solving homicides, but it's something of an embarrassment to the department. Still, Mark is eager to look into these old cases and try to find someone who got away with murder. A chance file misplaced in the room takes Mark on a different direction, however. He's convenienced that one victim of a serial killer was murdered by a copycat who's still free. Striking out on his own, he begins to gather more evidence.

Meanwhile, Jack Stewart is back to perform a kidney transplant on one of Mark's patience, stirring up old feelings of betrayal in the tight nit group. Why exactly did Jack vanish with hardly a goodbye? And Jesse, who was finally beginning to feel free of Jack's shadow, is threatened by his return.

I started watching this show part way through its run, but I've caught a number of reruns over the years. I always enjoyed it. This book, written by one of the writer/producers, is just like catching an extended episode I missed. As you'd expect from someone that closely related to the series, the characters are perfectly in character, and I got quite a kick out of some of the character moments. Mr. Goldberg also uses the format and opportunity to explore the characters a little more. While this part could have used a little more polish, I enjoyed it.

And the plot! I stayed up later then intended on more then one occasion to read "just one more chapter." Even though I figured things out a little earlier then I normally like, figuring out how Mark would make the connections certainly kept me glued to the pages.

If you were at all a fan of the TV show, run out and get this book today. You won't be sorry.

5.0 out of 5 stars A must read for all fans of Diagnosis Murder !, 31 Aug 2003
By Ann Rivers (HORLEY, Surrey Great Britain) - See all my reviews
TV tie in books have always been popular, but they are not usually written by people directly linked to the series itself.

In the case of The Silent Partner, however, the story has been written by one of DM's own producers, Lee Goldberg - and it shows ! All of the familiar, favourite characters are there - and thanks to Mr Goldberg's unique knowledge of these characters, you are allowed to see them in a new, often surprising light. The relationship between Steve Sloan and his father, especially, is given a whole new dimension.

The story itself is full of the twists and turns that made the series so entertaining. Mark Sloan wannabes will have a great time, piecing together all the clues - with plenty of DM's famous humour along the way !

So if you're a Diagnostic who, like me, has waited so long for more adventures with Dr Sloan and Co, then I'd recommend this book ! You'll find that wait coming to a highly enjoyable end !

5.0 out of 5 stars I AM IN HEAVEN!!!!!, 2 Jan 2006
I have been so fed up since Diagnosis Murder has no longer been on TV, so as soon as I discovered this novel I couldn't wait to get my hands on it. It certainly lived up to expectations. It has everything the TV series has and more. The murders are just a little bit more gritty and your get so much more information and feeling for the characters, which they obviously could never put in a TV episode. I am a massive Diagnosis Murder fan, but having said that I definately feel this book would appeal to anyone who loves a good murder mystery. I would definately recommend this book and can't wait to read the next.
