4.0 out of 5 stars Carolers and mistletoe, 30 Nov 2000
By A Customer
I admit to being an addict to Christmas regencies and I always try to get a couple of anthologies for holiday reading. It's such a pity that they put just one out every year and that all the old ones are out of print.. There's something in Regency London and Christmas that seem to belong together. This anthology is quite a good one. It opens with a Mary Balogh story with a well rounded plot, complete with carolers, a not-so-dumb widow and a wicked baron who hates Christmas. Edith Layton's Nightingale story is nice and unusual, pity it's so very short. Elizabeth Fairchild never fails to deliver. Here she has a little girl go "a gooding" to a neighboring sinister earl aptly nicknamed "devil" and convince him to celebrate a full Christmas with bell ringers, mummers, mistletoe and of course a pretty governess. Carla Kelly's story, while hunting singers for the parish choir, matches a handsome widower who is also a marquis with a mistreated widow who is also pregnant. The last story - Melody - is the one I liked less, probably because I didn't take to the "colonial who's inherited the title" type and to the female character. But four great stories out of five is not bad at all and by the time you've read them all I can guarantee that you'll be bursting with good feelings and Christmas cheer.
