This first novel in the Von Bek sequence (followed by the sequel `The City In The Autumn Stars') finds disillusioned warrior Ulrich von Bek set on the quest to find the Holy Grail, and thereby bring an end between the war between Heaven and Hell. Having the hero in the employ of Satan makes for a novel twist, and Moorcock pulls no punches in his depictions of the evils caused by religious wars, but on the downside a lot of this novel runs along the standard fantasy quest formula, with von Bek being told to journey to X, where he will meet Y, who will send him on a journey to Z etc etc. A pleasantly dark fantasy, but occasionally a little too predictable in its form.
