5.0 out of 5 stars Fascinating account of a by-way of history, 29 Nov 2006

(TOP 500 REVIEWER)
Not for Alfred Duggan the common approach to historical novels. You will not find him telling the story of King Arthur, or Julius Caesar, or William the Conqueror. He may deal with major historical events, yes, but they are seen from the point of view of one of the lesser players and so seen and presented with a different perspective. Sometimes he deals with a by-way of history, a time or place we do not think of. In "Lord Geoffrey's Fancy" he takes such a time and place, a society of which few of us have even heard, and draws us into this world.

In the Thirteenth Century Crusaders headed for the Holy Land turned aside and instead conquered and occupied the East Roman (Byzantine) Empire which was their nominal ally, installing a Western emperor in Constantinople and introducing a medieval feudal system to its lands. This was the infamous Fourth Crusade. The occupation lasted only a few generations, the Westerners were too few, and the native populations too firmly wedded to their historic loyalty to the Eastern Empire and the Greek Orthodox Church to be content under the "Franks" and Roman Catholicism.

At the time of this book the "Grifons" (Greeks)are coming close to completing their re-conquest and re-establishing the Byzantine Empire. One of the few seemingly-secure Frankish realms is that of Greece, where lords and knights still hold sway. They seem unaware not only of what the future holds but also of the past - blissfully unaware of the heritage of their place, just noting occasionally the quality of the roads and buildings contracted by "the mighty men of old". They gradually become aware of the growing threat to their way of life but lack the means to protect it in the long term.

Against this background of a society seemingly secure but facing growing outside threats and inevitable decline Alfred Duggan has weaved his familiar magic, entering into the minds of the people and conveying in a telling manner how they saw and experienced things. The narrator is a household knight following Sir Geoffrey de Bruyere, a brave lord, a paladin of chivalry - someone who seemingly shows the best side of Frankish nobility and yet manages in the process to make things worse of his people.

Duggan's books are slow-burning page-turners. You cannot canter through them if you wish to get the best from them, the degree of detail in description and in the character's speech mean you must take your time, but yet you are drawn in, hooked, and have great difficulty putting the book down. During his lifetime he was hailed as one of the greatest historical novelists of the Twentieth Century - try him, you will see why, he will not let you down.
