4.0 out of 5 stars Challenging, entertaining, intelligent, slightly unsettling, 14 Feb 2004
By A Customer
In a Huxley kind of future, where birth control is executed to avoid diseases and malformations, three kinds of human classes have evolved: doctors and genetic engineers who "cut" the DNA into special patterns, ordinary men and women (product of such cuts) whom by some misterious reason are becoming more and more sterile, and Optimen: those whose "cut" has made them almost perfect and leave for milion of years taking care of the rest of humanity, and who have resigned to reproduce themselves. Besides, cyborgs are suspected to mingle between the population...
When the Durant's decide to claim their right to watch their embryo's "cutting" progress the unleash a political storm that will change things forever and uncover truths.
A very well documented and most intelligently written book, it has the political turmoil typical of Dune series, and ponders where certain roads of science and control could lead to. Lots of hidden interest and manipulative characters as in Fountain Society.
...And in its basic scientifical approach and application not too far from our society's attempts right now.
