3.0 out of 5 stars This is not my favourite, or my best..., 17 April 2008

(TOP 100 REVIEWER)    (REAL NAME)
Lots of these newer Charlie and Lola books are spin offs from the television series, and aren't written by Lauren Child at all. Sometimes this doesn't matter, as the series and the books do try to stay as close to the original books as possible, and with good reason, they work.

This one, to me, is not quite on the money. Child is very playful and cheeky with her stories. It's always clear that Charlie and Lola are good kids who are kind to each other, despite the mischief they get into, but in this book the moral is rather laboured, and it's alarmingly thin on the amusement front.

Lola becomes obsessed by dressing up as an alligator, and refuses to do anything unless she is in costume. Charlie worries that she will be teased, especially when she decides to go to school dressed as an alligator. Lola proves that his fears are unfounded and that it is 'ok to be different'. All a bit too chocolate boxy for my liking and my kids least favourite of the books.

1.0 out of 5 stars Poor, 10 Jan 2009
Very poor by comparison with Lauren Child's own books. These are poor ghost-written stories which diminish her reputation. On this title, the attribution is, presumably, deliberately obscured on the cover. Cynical marketing by the publisher and very disappointing from such a talented and original author.

4.0 out of 5 stars "But I am an alligator mum!", 18 Dec 2008
By Susan Dixon - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
"But I am an alligator mum!" Is what my daughter kept saying to me when we read this book. We have read many Charlie and Lola books together and this is among my favorite and my best. To spite Charlies dislike of Lolas costume she keeps it on for ages- even for school!

Two Kinds Of Magic!
