For me this book was about keeping family secrets and the dangers inherent in this as an invariable principle. Valerie was brought up to believe that 'what happens in the house stays in the house' and this belief, above all other considerations, stops her from speaking, even to her beloved parents, about what is really going on in her marriage. The author shows profound understanding of the issues of domestic violence, so often a secret abuse, hidden by both perpetrator and victims from the world outside. The home becomes psychologically closed, so that even if friends and relatives visit they will be presented with a picture of normality and even contentment. The way in which the image of normality breaks down over the years, the way in which the family is broken, are heart-stoppingly poignant, because the narrative is so real and so moving; yet the author never labours the point: the facts are understated and the writing is concise. It has some of the elements of Greek tragedy about it, in that from the beginning the reader is aware of the seeds of disaster building up and moving into an inevitable conclusion - and yet we are left with a little light at the end of the tunnel! I think the book is a faithful portrayal of the isolating effects of domestic abuse and a very sound social comment on a problem that is worldwide and classless. It's also an unput-downable story.
