5.0 out of 5 stars Coming of age in deep space, 28 Mar 2004
Ryan is a mixed-up teenager from a wealthy celebrity family (and a broken home, as his father is a deep-space captain who has only met his son three times in his life before). His personal bodyguard is also his mother's lover, which Ryan finds difficult to handle.

Ryan has started flirting with the wilder side of life via drugs, after suffering post-traumatic stress disorder due to a bomb blast at his grandfather's embassy on Earth. Ryan's best weapon is his voice, and he manages to try the patience of just about everyone he meets. You get a good insight into why he feels the way he does and what he is so confused.

The action really starts when Ryan's father arrives and practically abducts him onto his ship to keep him safe from assasins. Here Ryan learns some of the harder realities of life and also gets to know his father better, as well as other people on the ship, especially the mysterious Jos. I really liked the way the author handled the scenes between father and son, especially having myself experienced bringing up sullen smart-mouthed teenagers!

Not having read Warchild (yet) I was able to empathise with Ryan, who struggled to fully comprehend the political complexities going on around him. It left me wanting to know more about the other characters in the story, which were introduced in Warchild, the first book in the series (which will eventually be a trilogy).

4.0 out of 5 stars a good follow up to War Child, 28 Feb 2004
A good follow up to Karin Lowachee's excellent first novel "War Child". Burn dive features the priviledged, but lonely son of two famous people who has turned to drugs after some traumatic experiences. Targetted by the media as the most eligible bachelor around, his life changes when he is also targetted by assassins.

Some way into the novel we meet up with all the characters we met in War Child and we find out what is happening with them, with the war and the pirates. This was the best bit for me as I didn't really warm to the poor little rich boy hero. Read Ward Child first anyway
