5.0 out of 5 stars An absolutely spectacular multi threaded space opera, 27 Feb 2001
Although hesitant at first when I purchased this book, I was soon swept away by both the enormity if the scale and the development of the characters. The descriptions of the scenes are completely believable, exciting and breath taking, the description of the characters, like in many great books leaves you feeling like you know them personally.

Not since the Dune series have I got so much enjoyment out of a book - the biggest bonus was when I reached the end and found out it is the first of three.

I recommend that anyone who has read any Iain M Banks or Frank Herbert should give this book a go.

1.0 out of 5 stars A total waste of time, 6 May 2003

Awful. Just awful. Yes, it's an enormous book, set in an enormous universe, but it's really far too long winded. Hamilton introduces a myriad of characters in extreme detail, only for them to die in the next chapter. The story line is far from taut, the enormous number of strands loosely woven around pages of flaccid and interminable descriptive passages. Even after 1400-odd pages, Hamilton fails to give the story an ending! I perservered with this book right until the end, and threw it away in disgust at the non-ending - you only actually discover that you're gonna have to read the other 2 equally long volumes to find out what happens in the end. Don't waste your time.
