Product Description

Sara Gruen, author of the NYTimes Bestseller WATER FOR ELEPHANTS

'Joshilyn Jackson has done it again. With a storyteller's easy grace, she whisks readers between bourgeois Victorianna, where dirty laundry and family drunks are secured firmly behind a Sunbonnet Sue exterior, and the unfathomable poverty of DeLop, a town of single-wives, chained pitbulls and no way out--unless you're willing to sacrifice your very soul. Nothing is quite as it seems, and Jackson's skilful unraveling of family secrets and betrayal left me breathless. You must read this book!' --This text refers to the Paperback edition.

1.0 out of 5 stars Unattractive, whiney characters, 31 Dec 2009
I wanted to like this book but the characters are so unlikeable!!! The main protagonist is spoilt and petulant; her daughter is the worst kind of brat; and her husband is a drip. The actress sister has a gay husband - this adds nothing at all to the plot and is frankly unbelievable. The ghost aspect is misleading because it doesn't really go anywhere. The denouement is really stupid and after it all the leading players just go back to their shining lives. I'm not usually hard on books and very rarely feel strong enough to review those I've read but, wowee, this was utter pants. Avoid.

1.0 out of 5 stars One of the worst books i've ever read, 5 April 2009
Being a sucker for a pretty cover i picked this up thinking it would make a good summer read but couldn't have been more wrong. The main character was dull and whiny as well as predictable in everything she said and done and the ending which had possibilities to be a huge climax flopped as it was unbelievable as well as silly. A big let down for me from start to finish.

5.0 out of 5 stars Someone should make this into a movie, 30 Jun 2008

(REAL NAME)
When Laurel Hawthorne is woken in the middle of the night to find a ghost in her bedroom and a girl drowned in her swimming pool her world is turned upside down. As she looks to her elder sister to help her find the killer and protect her daughter, Laurel comes to discover that the people and events of her past are not what she thought them to be. As the pieces come together Laurel has to race to rescue the one thing she holds most precious...

Jackson weaves a tale around vivid characters, pitting the perfect facade of suburbia in stark contrast against the harsh reality of the rural south - if you're looking for a book that will draw you in so far you're not sure where the book ends and your life begins then you need to read The Girl Who Stopped Swimming.
