From the Author

Why I wrote EVERYDAY ENLIGHTENMENT.
One day the question occured to me, "What does "personal growth" really mean? The answer, when it came, appeared in the form of twelve arenas of life--twelve "gateways" that form the foundation of personal and spiritual growth, of success, fulfillment--leading toward our human potential.

These gateways--dealing with worth, will, energy, money, mind, intuition, emotions, courage, shadows, sexuality, the heart, and finally, service-- represent the culmination of all that I’ve so wanted to share these years--a complete map to the territory of human potential. It sheds new light on the higher purpose and promise of everyday life, about what each of us is here to do, and finally, how to live a more enlightened life each day, each moment.

3.0 out of 5 stars A good book with some really useful gems, 7 Jun 2000
By A Customer
I have been reading personal development books for years, and sometimes feel that I've been reading the same book over and over again. This book does contain some gems, one questioning technique that alone was worth the price of the book. This is a well rounded book that looks at twelve different aspects to personal development, with the ultimate goal being a life of service.

I wasn't sure about the section on dealing with emotions. This was, ironically, thought provoking. Dan argues that we cannot control our emotions, but we can observe them, let them go and carry on, through will power, with our lives. He says that being depressed and cleaning the house anyway will leave you depressed, but at least your house will be clean. As someone trained in NLP, I believe that we can control our emotions, using anchors to control our state. However Dan's viewpoint is closer to the norm and I wonder if it is not a better spiritual practice to experience our emotions and observe them dispassionately and still carry on with our lives.

Overall I would recommend this book, you will almost certainly find something that touches you from one of the 12 gateways to human potential.

5.0 out of 5 stars Practical and gentle suggestions for a spiritual life, 11 Mar 2001
By A Customer
For anyone interested in walking and talking a real, practical spirituality on a day to day basis, this is an excellent book. Millman's style is gentle and holistic, and reads a bit like a modern update of the excellent "You'll See It When You Believe It" by Wayne Dyer. This is very much a compliment!

Practical suggestions for physical, financial, mental, emotional and spiritual personal development are featured throughout. These are divided into twelve "gateways", beginning with recognizing your self-worth and ending with living your daily life as a spiritual practice in itself. The chapter on managing your money I found very useful when developing my own business as an astrologer. His treatment of sexuality, an area not always covered so openly in books of this kind, was another highlight. "Illuminating Your Shadow" is a balanced consideration of the dark side of anyone attempting to live a more spiritual life. Compassion for ourselves and others is continually emphasized in this section, as elsewhere.

Millman has used a wide range of quotes to support his ideas, contributions coming from Aldous Huxley, Miss Piggy and St. Augustine to name a few. My favourite is from Christopher Morley:- "No man is lonely while eating spaghetti; it requires so much attention".

5.0 out of 5 stars Everyday Enlightenment - a Pathway for the Strong-Hearted, 9 Jul 1999
By A Customer
The challenge shown here is to LIVE LIFE with an every-day, moment-to-moment awareness of one's own actions; to act with a fearless, one step in front of the other awareness, a consciousness of being.

If you are UNAFRAID to confront your fears, to peer into those dark places that keep you in the shadows -- here's a guidebook for enLIGHTenment to help you on your way.

Thanks Dan -- I've heard you speak in San Francisco & Sacramento and I continue to read and LIVE your teachings daily -- Namaste
