4.0 out of 5 stars Graphic and absorbing tale of ancient Egyptian life, 7 Aug 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: Ancient Evenings (Paperback)
It has taken me a long time to get through this book - don't expect it to be a light bedtime read! What you will get though is a colourful, absorbing, exciting, well-written (as always for Mailer), flowing and at times very graphic account of the life of the Egytian Pharoahs of around three thousand years ago. Mailer really makes you enter the world he is writing about. This is an unforgettable read.

5.0 out of 5 stars An Astounding piece of Literature, 15 Nov 2002
This review is from: Ancient Evenings (Paperback)
This book is such an impressive piece of work I coluld barely cope with it. Mailer brandishes the English language with such flair and style that sections of this book left my jaw hanging. It might take a couple of chapters to fully get into the style and mannner in which it's told, but once you're in there it's incredibly gripping, utterly believable. It's definately not an 'easy' read and it does contain a great deal of sex and violence but don't let that put you off. I really don't want to go overboard here but I can't find words strong enough to illustrate how dazzled I was by the excellence of this book

5.0 out of 5 stars Total immersion in the richness of life in Ancient Egypt., 21 Nov 2000
By A Customer
Norman Mailer called this his life work - there is so much detail you sense/see/live life in Ancient Egypt. The highlight has got to be the Battle of Kadesh - 17 years of war in chapters. Great writing for those readers who like muscular prose whipped into poetry.

I read this book when it was first published over 20 years ago. Not an easy read, not many of Mailer's books are, but thought provoking and interesting in the extreme. Read more

5.0 out of 5 stars an extraordinary read
This is a typical Mailer piece. Demanding, long, thought provoking, and very sensual, not to say downright smutty. Read more
