4.0 out of 5 stars Entertaining, raunchy, definitely different!, 17 April 2000
By A Customer
This book, and the sequel, Banners of Gold, are definitely different from the usual historical fiction/romance! Alix of Wanthwaite is 10 years old, when her parents are killed. Her father sends her, in his dying breath of course, to seek audience with the king, to restore the family estate. Alix travels disguised as a boy, and ends up on crusade in her efforts to petition King Richard. The story line may not be unusual, but the writing style is, the historical research is excellent, the characters are well drawn, and the whole is a bawdy, lively trip into the past, seen through the eyes of a rather spoilt, wilful, and resourceful young girl.
