4.0 out of 5 stars The One I Recomend To My Patients, 17 May 2007
By Dr. Michael Rowlands (UK/Algarve Portugal) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
There are a lot of books on Bipolar Disorder on the market and although this one is principally written for professionals such as GP's and Community Nurses, it is the one I recomend to my patients. It treats the reader as an adult, and it is my belief that for such a condition the patient must understand as much as is possible about their illness, as the long term outcome is often dependent on taking medication for many years. Dr Hunt is a respected researcher in the field and he is knowledgable about the illness. Hence, this is my first recomendation to patients. Dr Michael Rowlands. Consultant Psychiatrist.

4.0 out of 5 stars Understanding bipolar disorder, 1 Dec 2007
By John R. Sherwell (Cambridge, UK) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
This volume is in Elsevier's "Your Questions Answered" series, which aims to provide succinct, expert handbooks on clinical topics for GPs and other health professionals. There are six chapters covering the background and treatment of Bipolar Disorder, using the popular question and answer format which allows the reader to dip into the content. Each chapter also includes case studies, and concludes with frequently asked patient questions. There are also three appendices including one that lists useful organisations and websites.

The author states that this book may also be of interest to patients and their carers. As a patient I can vouch for this from personal experience, as the clearly written and approachable content provided me with some valuable insights into my own condition, particularly the chapters on "Causes and course of the illness" and "Lithium and long-term prophylactic treatment". If you want a clear and understandable guide to Bipolar Disorder, then this is a very good place to start.
