The latest 20th Edition of Davidson's Principles & Practice of Medicine won the award for a New Edition of an Edited Textbook at the Royal Society of Medicine and Society of Authors 2007 Medical Book Awards in London. The award citation described the book as "Beautifully constructed with superb clarity of style - Davidson's continues to provide for students, doctors and other health professionals a sound basis for the practice of medicine."

Medical students often ask me to recommend textbooks of internal medicine. Now, after reviewing the 19th edition of Davidson's Principles and Practice of Medicine, I can be confident in replying 'Davidson's'.

The text is comprehensive and very up to date using digestible language to inform and educate the reader. The use of detailed colour diagrams and pictures also enhances the readers understanding and makes the text more manageable.
At the end of the firstchapter the authors list additional resources which the reader can then search out in order to gain more information on particular topics. I found this to be an invaluable aspect of the book and also allows readers to clarify any uncertainties by accessing information from a different resource.

In my opinion, the best new aspect about this book is its online contents...[such as] bonus content from other textbooks including Macleod's Clinical Examination and best of five self-testing questions, which allow you to test your knowledge of each chapter. I have found this invaluable for preparing for exams and they give you a very good idea about how much more revision you need to do. I would recommend Davidson's principles and practice of medicine to any medical student, but especially to those in their clinical years.

This book is packed full of information and it is presented in a much more logical and readable way than kumar. Read kumar and u just learn a lot of facts, read Davison's and you understand medicine. I own Kumar & Clarke as well but did not end up using it as much as i found it quite a boring read. It is detailed and structured but does not incite an interest in the subject like Davidson's does. The way information is presented in Davidson's also makes it easy to retain. And it has all the important information and the right emphasis on each topic. I also really like the EBM summaries presented in the little boxes found throughout the book. Wish I had found it earlier. Recommended for all medical students and practising doctors. I agree with the other reviewers- Davidson's is in my opinion a much better textbook than Kumar & Clarke, which I found very encyclopedic. You won't regret it. Your colleagues will say Kumar is bigger and better; take pity on them. The text is hugely accessible and informative and mostly comprehensive. The page layout is excellent with very appropriate use of tables and pictures. The book is visually delightful and even has better paper quality than Kumar. Reading it is a pleasure. The only ommision is a chapter on molecular medicine which was present in the previous edition. Much of the information has been relocated to other chapters but nevertheless, the molecular basis chapter was useful for revising preclinicals. The rest of the book easily makes up for this however and greatly facilitates strong exam and viva performance Comment Comment | Permalink | Was this review helpful to you?
