Product Description

Book Description

General and Systematic Pathology is a highly acclaimed textbook, written and designed for students of medicine and related health science subjects. It presents pathology in the context of modern cellular biology and clinical practice. This comprehensive text begins with the principles of pathology and the mechanisms of disease before covering systematic pathology.

For this edition considerable care has been taken to further refine and improve the contents. The editors have responded to detailed feedback provided by an International Advisory Board. Further Reading sections have been extended and annotated and key web sites have been included. In response to the integration between the scientific and clinical parts of the courses, is a new feature `Mechanism of treatment' boxes. These identify which part of the pathological process is influenced by various treatments and how.

About the Author

James Underwood is the Professor of Pathology at the University of Sheffield, UK, and a Consultant Histopathologist. For over 30 years, James has enjoyed the challenge of teaching pathology to students of medicine, dentistry and related subjects, while diagnosing disease in the living and the dead and researching into its causes.

James graduated in medicine and started his career in pathology in London before going to Sheffield. During his early career he held a research fellowship from the Medical Research Council and in the early 1980s he had a sabbatical in Australia. His main interests are in breast cancer and chronic inflammatory liver disease. James is currently Vice-President of the Royal College of Pathologists, President of the British Division of the International Academy of Pathology, and Editor of "Histopathology", a monthly journal. He was, of course, delighted to be declared a Winner at the Royal Society of Medicine's Book Awards 2000 for the third edition of "General and Systematic Pathology".

His main interest outside work is leisure! But he also enjoys strenuous walks with his family in wet, wild and windy places, and he has a passionate interest in music.

4.0 out of 5 stars A worthwhile investment..., 21 Jun 2004
By A Customer
As the title suggests, it starts with the basic principles of pathology and then goes through each system, covering enough detail without being too overbearing. There are loads of good quality colour photos, with the compulsory gory allocation a pathology book has to have! The text not only covers pathological details but relevant physiology, aetiology and clinical features. It's useful throughout medical school life and is definitely one to recommend. Overall, a worthwhile investment!

5.0 out of 5 stars A must have for a Sheffield Medical Undergraduate!, 31 Mar 2004
By S. Helyer - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
A very detailed and well structured text on pathology. Written by the professor of pathology at Sheffield - it pretty much covers everything on the pathology curriculum here. The introductory chapters are also very useful and include such topics as the causation of disease etc. Very descriptive and very well written. You will need to supplement this with a good clinical medicine book (such as kumar and clark) to simplify things a little!!

4.0 out of 5 stars excellent terminolgy and diagramatic help., 30 Sep 2000
By A Customer
I think the book is good because it takes you on a journey from basic levels of understanding to more advanced. It does not cloud you with heavy terminology and explains pathology adequately to get a good understanding of the subject. For undergraduate students more key questions would have been welcome.
