5.0 out of 5 stars a must...with some weak points, 11 Feb 2002
By A Customer
A most enjoyable reading. However, some of the chapters are more a presentation of the authors works and opinions than an impartial technical description (condylar fractures). Other chapters are too short (orthognatic surgical techniques: only the mandibular split and the Lefort I are reviewed in detail). There is no chapter about dento-alveolar surgery and not much about pre-prosthetics. These are in my opinion the weakest points. The Clefts are remarkably well treated. As a trainee, I would say it's a must.

5.0 out of 5 stars This book is a must-have for all maxillofacial surgeons, 14 Nov 2001
This is a two volume hard back set. It has multiple authors who are well chosen as experts in their field. This may have the disadvantage that the style of writing varies slightly between chapters (although good editing keeps this problem to a minimum) but it has the advantage that the reader gets infomation by a surgeon who actually does what he or she is writing about. This sadly is not very common in medicine, well published writers are often too busy writing to do much operating and become out of touch with modern surgical practice. A particularly impressive chapter is by Leo Stassen on secondary cleft palate repair where he takes the reader through the details of exactly how he does the procedure.
The set covers all the major branches of maxillofacial surgery including some great chapters on aesthetic facial surgery. All the chapters are followed by extensive references which is helpful for further reading.
This book is perfect for the trainee in maxillofacial sugery at all levels. Although it is bit expensive it is very readable, a delight to own, beutifully bound, great quality paper and I love the colour (purple).
On the down side there are no colour photographs and the X-rays are hard to see. In summary I would recommend this book to all trainees, every library should have a copy, but lets hope the second edition has some colour photos and better pictures of X-rays.
