4.0 out of 5 stars A very good, thorough and understandable book., 2 Aug 1996
By A Customer
Software Testing Techniques by Boris Beizer is an absolute must for anyone who has a serious interest in software testing. This 549-page book covers nearly every aspect of the process of finding errors in computer programs, moving from basic definitions and terminology through detailed and easy-to-understand explanations of most testing strategies in use today, finishing with a chapter on implementing testing strategies in a development organization.

This book is written with the practitioner in mind, but can equally well be used by students in software engineering curriculums. It presents both theory and practice in a thorough and clear manner, illustrating both concepts and practical techinqes with numerous realistic examples.

All in all, in this reviewers mind, this is a very good book on software testing, in particular for the active practicioner, but could definitely be used by students of software engineering.

5.0 out of 5 stars Indispensable for serious testers, 9 Jun 2008
Beizer was a pioneer in the area of systematic testing techniques and AFAIK the first to publish a substantial work illustrating the various commonly used white-box testing techniques. This book remains deservedly a classic and worth every penny (especially if you can lay your hands on the paperback edition published in India - less than GBP 4.00 when I bought mine).

Beizer gives an exceptionally clear account of the most commonly used structural test coverage measurements with the underlying mathematics set out so that you can understand the essentials. His explanation of graph-theoretic concepts used in test coverage measurement is still, IMO, the best in print and covers most of the techniques cited in the British and European standards for software component testing (sorry Yanks, but Europe is ahead of you here :-).

For the working software engineer, this book will tell you most of what you need to know about the principles of white-box testing. If you want to know about black-box testing, get Beizer's other book of that title.

As you might expect from its vintage, the book has nothing on OO or GUI testing. In this respect Jorgensen's "Software Testing: A Craftsman's Approach" covers more ground, though in less depth. Nevertheless, "Software Testing Techniques" should be on every serious tester's bookshelf, if not graven in his or her memory.

I often recommend this book + Jorgensen + Hetzel's book on software test management to clients who need to do rigorously controlled testing of high-integrity systems.
