I first met this book when I was eleven and read it over and over again until I was nearly twenty.

It's the story of Murdoc Jern, the adopted son of a jewel dealer with a murky past. Kidnapped for the sake of a strange gem, he allies with an alien mutant to defend his own against both the Thieves Guild and the Patrol.

This story is kept beautifully focussed by the strange, powerful presence of the Zero Stone, and the often hinted at but never explained (in this book) relationship between Eet and the long-forgotten species who used the stones.

Many powerful moments, despite a rather linear plot and a limited number of characters. Overall not quite as good as 'Sargasso of Space' and 'Plague Ship', which operate in the same fictional universe, but good stuff all the same.
