I like Andre Norton's work, and have read as much of her Science Fiction as I have been able to find, but I've never liked the Witch World series.

This book comes somewhere in between. I liked the story, but found the mucking around with word order, to give an archaic feel, irritating.

If you know and like other Andre Norton books, give this one a try too. Otherwise, I'd recommend starting with something else.

The ending begs a sequel - but there doesn't seem to be one.

sorry after reading the two comments already made i just had to write quick note saying a love andre norton's books and its a real shame that she died earlier this year.

this book is great and the sequel is sold in a double copy thing by amazon as mark of the cat/year of the rat.

so there IS a sequel: YEAR OF THE RAT

First off I have to say that i am NOT a big fan of the author. However this book holds me spellbound each time I read it. The story revolves around two seperate people but is primarily the tale of a peaceable boy born to a warrior family. Because of this he is held in despite and is thought worthless by his relatives. It covers his trial of manhood and eventual journey to the capital city in company with the fabled sandcat, much feared by the general population.

The only annoying thing about this is the ending simply shouts out for a sequel although i have been unable to find one.
