5.0 out of 5 stars Steam-punk at its best!, 14 Jun 2007
If there's one book I wish I'd written, it's this one. Despite reading all his others, this remains my favourite Blaylock work. The characters are superb, the atmosphere a proper `pea souper' and the action just fantastic. I can hear every accent when I read it, and taste every mouthful of frothy beer! The villains are just as villains should be, and the heroes likewise. It's a world which never was yet which feels 100% real.

I find that Blaylock writes with such authority that I simply don't question the unbelievable nature of what's going on, or the adversaries, or even the pseudo-science. Whenever I read it I think that a British writer probably never could have made this book feel so British, which is strange!

An old boyfriend `borrowed' my original copy years ago and I never saw it again! Eventually, I had to replace it as I needed my 'fix' (but I do miss the old cover which was really busy and fitted the story perfectly).

5.0 out of 5 stars Rip-roaring bodice-ripping Victorian steam-punk classic!, 31 Oct 2000
This review is from: Homunculus (Paperback)
This is a fantastic book. Absolutely fantastic. Make no mistake about it, James Blaylock is a master of this genre (as well as that of the 'nouveau' ghost story). This is incredibly visual and imaginative writing, in which the Victorian bends to the modern technological age so seamlessly that nothing seems out of place. The beauty of the Victorian era for so many similar writers is that it was an age of gross and baffling machinery, and the concepts of space flight and so forth are not out of place in this context, compared to, say, the Georgian era.

Blaylock is a master writer and his books are never less than entertaining, and this one is packed full of so many great Victorian horror stereotypes, from the evil hunchback Dr Narbondo to the equally evil and self-serving acne victim Willis Pule. Add the virtuous members of the Trismegistus Club, an avaricious millionaire, a bunch of zombies and the usual Victorian thugs, and you have a cracker of a story, and all told with the tongue firmly in cheek!

Great stuff. You must read this!
