I look forward to reading each new book by Chaz Brenchley because, good as they are, I get the feeling he is still experimenting and finding his feet writing fantasy and so future ones will be even better. Despite the 'Arabian Nights' bracket the publishers have tried to fit this series into, it is genuinely original: the only other setting it really reminded me of was Rebecca Bradley's 'Lady in Gil'. After a lot of (still enjoyable) scene setting in the first volume the plot really takes off here, although the author easily avoided doing any of the things I expected to happen. This is not particularly 'feel-good' fantasy and at times I was reminded that he has also written horror novels. A satisfying and gripping book which left plenty of room for further installments.
