This is the story of Piper Pied. She comes from a very eccentric family -- she seems to be the only stable member of that family. Upon the death of her Great Grandmother, she inherits her house and all her belongings. Most surprising of all, she inherits an entrance to Fairy. She meets an elf named Aelvarim who insists that her great grandmother's death wasn't due to natural causes, but murder. Thus begins Piper and Aelvarim's hunt for the true cause of her great grandmother's death. The mystery remains just that through most of the book, which I believe is the mark of a good mystery -- keeps you guessing. In the midst of that mystery you meet the colorful characters of Fairy -- some sweet, some malevolent. Woven through the story is a burgeoning love story. All of the mystery, fantasy & romance of the story culminates in a well depicted climax.

This book was a very satisfying read. The characters were well developed and sympathetic, the plot was well paced and taught, the fantasy elements were colorful & very magical. I won't let my copy of this book go. Go buy your own, you'll be so glad you did!

Piper's first morning in her newly-inherited house is marred by only one thing - the tall dark and handsome stranger sitting at her breakfast table insisting he's an elf and that she has to help him save the land of Faery - which just happens to exist right outside her back door!

Having just read Goodkind's latest and psyching myself up to tackle Flewelling's 'The Bone Doll's Twin', this was a perfect 'breather' book. The plot is not taxing - a pleasing blend of humour, mystery and romance - and the main characters are well drawn and engaging. An excellent first novel - I'll certainly be on the lookout for more from Ms Lickiss in the future!

Piper Pied Dickerson comes from an eccentric family, but she doesn't know half of it. When her grandmother dies, Piper inherits a house with a strange feature: it is a connection point between our reality and Faerie. When a strikingly handsome elf named Aelvarim shows up, and informs Piper that Grandma Dickerson was murdered, Piper's life goes from upside-down to inside-out! As reality unravels in both worlds, it's up to Piper to find the murderer, straighten reality, and sort out her feelings for Aelvarim. This is no small task!

This is an eminently enjoyable book! The characters are odd, but in a believable sense, giving this book a solid foot in reality, even as it flies off into the ether of fantasy. I liked the way that the author handles the narrative, keeping me reading when I should be turning off the light. Bravo! This is a great book, one well worth your reading time!
