Entertaining mix of scifi and western, 24 Jan 2000

I bought this book because I am a fan of Bruce Boxleitner. I read the book because I found it to be an enjoyable and absorbing story.I was hooked form the outset when I was introduced to Macklin, a stranger with amnesia, who literally falls from the sky. I felt sympathetic towards him, as he struggles to survive in a strange land and discover his real purpose on earth. He is not the only stranger. He is being hunted by sinister aliens. The Kra'agh are ugly, carnivorous creatures, bent on destuction. Be warned...they have disgusting eating habits! Macklin's story is set against the backdrop of Tombstone, Arizona at the time of the Earp/Clanton feud. An unusual combination, but it works well. The author skilfully blends the plot by integrating the visitors into the everyday lives of the townspeople. The theme of good and evil permeates the story as the human and alien conflicts run parallel and then join as Macklin and the Kra'agh ally themselves to opposites sides of the feuding factions. The story moves along at a good pace, culminating in the inevitable "showdown". This is an interesting mix of scifi and western storytelling. It appears that extensive research was done to make it historically accurate and to give a realistic portrayal of life in the "wild west" at that time. Add to that, good characterisation of the humans and a vivid depiction of the Kra'agh and you have a very entertaining story. So we have a variety of characters; tension, aliens, gaurdians, gunfights and even a smattering of romance. What else could you ask for? Oh yes, a sequel! I can't wait.
