Review
'Compulsive readability' Junior Bookshelf 'Funny and light but the humour disguises real emotional truth and depth... it offers some very funny and pertinent home truths for parents, too' GUARDIAN

Product Description
Moving to a new area, Louis is horrified to discover his parents becoming ultra-competitive, wanting him and his younger brother to get straight As at school and join all sorts of after-school clubs like the other kids. Then Louis meets Maddy, who claims to have trained her parents to ignore her. Louis can't handle it any more. His new school is Swotsville and his mum and dad have fallen into some very bad ways. All they seem to care about now is how well he's doing at school (answer: not well) and what after-school clubs he wants to join (answer: none!). They're no longer interested in his jokes (his dream is to be a comedian) and have even nicked the telly out of his bedroom! What's going on? And can new friend Maddy help? For Maddy tells him her parents used to behave equally badly until she trained them. All parents have to be trained - and she knows a foolproof way...

5.0 out of 5 stars Quality Comedy, 18 Nov 2005
By A Customer
This book is really comic and it made me laugh for ages. How To Train Your Parents is about a young boy called Lewis and his best mate, Theo. Lewis is trying to be a stand-up comedian because it is his life-long ambition but his grades in class are not as good as they should be so he is not allowed any TV or any treats. Lewis cheats. He strikes a deal with Theo and gets round his parents. Find out if Lewis becomes the comedian that he wants to be in this exciting and humourous book. All ages and all comedy lovers will find this book addictive.

4.0 out of 5 stars funny, very enjoyable, gobble down all at once..., 28 Oct 2003

(REAL NAME)
Before Louis (12) moved house, his parents were pretty easy-going. However, to Louis' dismay, he finds his new school is full of geeks (bods, swots) who live for 'A' grades and attend after school groups such as 'French Club'. Louis is happy with his 'C' grades but his parents, seeing how the other parents push their kids to do well, start to think they are failing Louis and his little brother Elliott by not doing the same and begin to put pressure on them both to do better at school. They even start sitting in Louis' room, watching him do his homework! Luckily, Louis meets Maddis, whose parents give her all the space she needs. She soon explains to Louis the parent training programme he needs to follow to get his parents off his back.

This book is written as Louis' diary. He wants to be a comedian and so throws in the odd corny joke or two but the diary entries themselves are really funny - letting you know all the strange things his parents have been doing. This is one of those books that you pick up and don't put down until you have finished. Probably best for ages 8-12 (although older people may enjoy it too), both boys and girls and particularly anyone feeling annoyed with their parents!
