Product Description

Amazon.co.uk Review

Age: 9-11 years

At school they say I'm wired bad, or wired nad, or wired sad, or wired glad, depending on my mood and what teacher has ended up with me. But there is no doubt about it, I'm wired.
Joey is undoubtedly a handful: his tendency to literally spin down the school halls or bounce around the kitchen can, understandably drive the adults in his life insane. But Joey has Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder and he really has no control over his actions. He just does whatever pops into his head. And if that includes swallowing a key, then so be it...

Joey Pigza Swallowed the Key is one of the most unusual and absorbing books any child, or adult, is ever likely to read. Joey's story is at once wildly funny and despairingly sad, but most of all totally convincing. Jack Gantos writes with a dead-pan style that avoids patronising either the readers or Joey himself, and takes us into a world that swings from being breathtakingly wild and exciting to unbelievably confusing.

Joey Pigza Swallowed the Key is an unforgettable book that everyone should read at least once, and Joey Pigza is an extraordinary boy--not always likeable, but always real--who will undoubtedly stay in the hearts and minds of anyone who gets to know him. --Susan Harrison

5.0 out of 5 stars Jack Gantos deserves every writing award going for this book, 7 Feb 2002
By A Customer
As my 10 year old daughter says, this book is kind of funny and kind of sad - it's also kind of brilliant. Joey might be a kid with problems but you know you would love to meet him and have a laugh together. My daughter read it in a few days while I read it and the follow-up " Joey Pigza Loses Control" in one evening. Tells you so much not just about ADHD, but about being human and at the end you just want to cheer "Way to go Joey!". Oh yeah, it's also helped me with my work as a child psychiatrist and I shall be recommending it to my colleagues and anyone they know who loves a great book.

What a fantastic book! Last summer, I was looking for a new book to try and inspire a class of ten year olds to read. When I picked up 'Joey', I had little idea of what was about to happen in my classroom....

'Joey Pigza Swallowed the Key' is a book like no other. As an adult reader, I thoroughly enjoyed it and often laughed out loud whilst reading it to my class. The children loved the story and were immediately hooked on the many turns that Joey's life took. I don't think I've ever seen reactions like that to any book I've read to children.

It is a story that envokes laughter and sympathy, also giving a real understanding of ADHD. I would strongly recomend this book and the following two books about Joey also. Fantastic.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great book to read to a class with an ADHD child, 4 Nov 2002
Having someone like Joey in your class certainly makes life more interesting! The little boy in my class with ADHD loved this book, it made the end of his day, and the rest of the class roll around in hysterics. The events are totally realistic and told with honest humour. I thoroughly recommend this book to anyone involved with children with ADHD although I warn you, you may find yourself crying with laughter in front of the class!
