2.0 out of 5 stars Not The Best For Today, 28 Aug 1999
By A Customer
Maybe this book was ok when it came out but there's more to comedy today than only punchlines. I got more out of How To Be A Working Comic and Successful Stand-Up Comedy.

4.0 out of 5 stars Excellent...to a point..., 7 Sep 1999
By A Customer
While the book takes you through the basics of developing your skills and an act, it can be lacking in areas. If you get stuck at one of the steps, and nothing will work for you, it's practically impossible to go onto the next step. All the workshop sections are built off each other, so it's hard to skip one if you're having trouble. Other than that, it's an excellent book for the price.

2.0 out of 5 stars Not the best book of the bunch!, 3 Mar 1999
By A Customer
This was one of the first books I read on stand-up comedy and thought the book was OK until I read other books.

I didn't like the writing style because I felt it tried to be funny and informative at the same time - and most of the jokes were pretty lame anyway. Although I am sure the Author is funny on stage, I got the impression that she was trying to impress the reader with how funny she could be without quite pulling it off. The funniest things in the book are the advice or jokes of other comedians and it is probably not worth buying just for that.

I got very little out of this book compared to other books and I felt the book was too simplistic and only scratched the surface of Stand-Up - kind of like 'An Idiots Guide to Stand-Up'.

I would recommend 'Successful Stand-Up Comedy: Advice from a Comedy Writer' by Gene Perret and 'Zen & The Art of Stand-Up Comedy' by Jay Sankey over this book as I feel they pay more than lip-service to a lot more important aspects of Stand-Up like Character, Delivery and how to write for Stand-Up.
