5.0 out of 5 stars Funny, Mysterious and Very Entertaining!!, 31 Jan 1999
By A Customer
Francis Alphonse Tucket, a fourteen year old boy is in a wagon train with his family on its way to the Willimette Valley in Oregon. When Francis turns 14 on the trip, his father gives him a 55 caliber Lancaster rifle for his birthday. Francis wanders off to shoot his new rifle. He gets kidnapped by the Pawnee, a group of Plains Indians. They take him to their village where they try to make him the son of an old Pawnee woman. One day Francis sees a one-armed mountain man riding into the village, with powder and ammunition. Francis learns that he holds an unsteady peace with the Pawnee, in exchange for the powder and rifle balls, for the tribe. This mountain man, Mr. Grimes, helps Francis escape and he and Francis go through all kinds of adventures: from standoffs with Crow Indians, to beaver trapping. Mr. Grimes helps Francis become a man--Mr. Tucket. This was an awesome book. Paulsen was at his best! I liked this novel because of the action and adventures and setting. The way Paulsen writes sounds as if he was Mr. Tucket. I also like the story because of the way the characters talked. Mr. Grimes was funny. The second reason I liked this book was because it was funny, mysterious and very entertaining. I wish Gary Paulsen would write a book about Francis Tucket reaching Oregon, and finding his long lost family. That would be cool!

5.0 out of 5 stars Very Exciting!, 31 Jan 1999
By A Customer
Fourteen year old Francis Tucket and his family were driving on the Oregon Trail. At one point, Francis stayed behind the wagon alittle, to practice shooting. That's when the Pawness kidnapped him. Then, a mountain man named Mr. Grimes captured Francis from the Indians, and now he's staying with this man. Mr. Grimes tries to teach Francis how to shoot with a gun he gave him. The boy is able to shoot antelope and they eat it. Then Mr. Grimes and Francis went into a village with Mr. Jason and Bird Dance. They slept there for the night. One winter morning Francis escaped and lived in the wilderness alone, for awhile. He tried to return to his family...will he make it? I really like the book, and the way Francis overcame many conflicts.

4.0 out of 5 stars pretty good
I didn't like it as much as Mr.Tucket because it was too short and didn't have enough adventures in it. They were both great books though and I highly recomend them.
