4.0 out of 5 stars Good follow up to a decent thriller, 4 Feb 2002
By A Customer
Very little of what Leonard writes fails to grip the reader, and although this novel would possibly not have happened but for its Charles Bronson thriller predecessor, it still has the hallmark economy of style and hard-nosed set-pieces that make the author's books so enjoyable. Much more than a B-movie rehash, like the rest of Leonard's titles it is worthy of successive readings.

3.0 out of 5 stars Passable Novelization, 16 Aug 2001
By A Customer
This brief little story started off as a screenplay commissioned by Clint Eastwood. However, when Eastwood decided to make the uberdark High Plains Drifter instead, Leonard's script got sold to someone else and was turned into a movie starring Charles Bronson in 1974. Leonard subsequently novelized the screenplay, which accounts for its relative brevity. The story is pretty basic and, upon reflection, typically ridiculous. The title character is an Vietnam special forces vet who just wants to lead a quiet life farming melons. An altercation with a small-time hood lands him in jail with a notorious hitman, and things get sillier from there, as the he struggles to get back to his melons and get them in on time. There's a subplot involving a relationship with a Latina union organizer who seems really smart and together, that is, until she goes along with his harebrained plans. As always, Leonard's prose passes the time, but only barely.

5.0 out of 5 stars My First Elmore Leonard, 11 Sep 2008
This review is from: Mr Majestyk (Paperback)
I picked this title at random and because it was a slim volume. I decided to give this author a try and thought that a small novella could give me an introduction into Leonard's work.

I must admit to not realising untill reading the other reviews here that it was originally a screen play - I thought it would make a good film!

The plot was good and the twists excellent. Leonard shows talent by being able to make a melon farmer in rural USA a hard thinking, slow talking, under estimated killing machine, albeit a reluctant participant!

The tale was penned in 1974 but it stands well today, with no obvious references to tell it's age. I will be trying more of this author just to see if he can do it again. By the number of books he has written, some of which have been made into successful films, and the awards he has amassed this should be a pleasure!
