First Sentence
THE TWO MEN struggling on the floor of the Clerks' Room differed widely in appearance: one young, of slender build, dressed in cotton and denim, with honey-coloured hair worn rather long and a pleasing delicacy of feature; the other perhaps in his sixties, tending to plumpness, wearing a pinstriped suit, with the round, pink face face of a bad-tempered baby and very little hair at all. Read the first page

3.0 out of 5 stars A final curiosity from an author who will be missed, 6 Aug 2000
By S. B. Kelly (London United Kingdom) - See all my reviews

This review is from: The Sibyl in Her Grave (Hardcover)
It was with some trepidation that I approached this, Sarah Caudwell's last novel. After a gap of more than ten years, preceded by the disappointing 'The Sirens Sang of Murder', could Caudwell rediscover the genius of her first two Hilary Tamar novels in this posthumous work? Sadly, the answer is no, although it has to be admitted that 'Thus was Adonis Murdered' and 'The Shortest Way to Hades' were a hard act to follow. Caudwell's protagonists have aged not a day in ten years, but I can happily suspend disbelief on that, as I can on her trademark amazing coincidences. The writing is as elegant and eruditely witty as ever and the novel is worth reading as a tribute to an author who wrote two of the funniest and best plotted crime novels in the canon of contemporary fiction.
