2.0 out of 5 stars A disappointment, 15 Jul 1999
By A Customer
I thought this book was going to be about self-injury (SI), but it was more about Nancy and Katie's drug problems and sexual experimentation. It was a good book from that aspect, but it was misinformed about SI. Granted, there are people who SI who also take drugs and get into risky sexual situations, but this book seemed almost to say that one must be really messed up to SI . I think people who SI do have a lot of problems, but they don't have to be quite so self- destructive as Nancy and Katie. Also, I think it's a shame that Crosses was marketed as a book about SI when in fact it was really about almost every kind of self- destructive behavior. And the critics seem to think that it's a pretty good book about SI. When there aren't many informed books about SI on the market, it's easy to think this way. I guess I just didn't see myself in Nancy and Katie's thoughts or behaviors- as someone who has SIed (and I didn't see my friends who SI in them either).

5.0 out of 5 stars no hype, no pretense...just an amazing story, 22 Jan 2006
This review is from: Crosses (Paperback)
This book was one I discovered a few years ago and fell in love with. I had read 'cut' at the time and found it to be a little off the subject of self harm, so decided to try reading crosses. It is a far superior book, mentioning cutting and self harm beyond the first 10 pages, which is something cut failed to do. The characters are eccentric, out of control and overall hell raisers, but you can't help but feel captured by the manner with which they conduct such acts. I am a self harmer and this story offered something different; it put self harm in the context of a normal, unashamed teenager, rather than in the situation of being institutionalized for it. It showed self harm as something anyone out there can be guilty of, not just the people who are hospitalised for their behaviour. This book is one that will stay with me throughout my recovery from self harm and provides a great read!

5.0 out of 5 stars Greatest book ever!!, 31 Mar 2002
By littledevil5387@hotmail.com (Boston, Massachusetts) - See all my reviews
I read a lot of books but Crosses is defintely the best book I've ever read!!! Nancy and her best friend Katie do not have the world's easiest lives. They like to experiment with drugs and alcohol. They feel very insecure so they start cutting themselves. Read this book and you'll be very surprised at the end!
