5.0 out of 5 stars A story of overcoming diversity, 22 Aug 1999
By A Customer
Two people from opposite sides of the tracks, having known each other from a distance, or thrown into a marriage. They appear meant for each other, but it lasts only one night. Its war time and an ambush the day following the wedding leads Major Neville Wyatt to believe his wife of one day, Lily, is dead. Almost two years later, he has gotten on with his life and his new wedding day is interrupted by Lily's unexpected return. She looks like a begger and is obviously uneducated, but Neville has only eyes for her. The rest of this warm and tender story involves how love wins over all obstacles. A great heartwarming story.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent Regency romance, 30 May 1999
By A Customer
During the fight against Napoleon, Neville Wyatt, Earl of Kilbourne, met and fell in love with Lily Doyle, daughter of a dead soldier. However, the misfortunes of war hit home as Neville returns to England as a widower. A sad but wiser Neville returns to the Ton where he rejoins the festive activities. Ultimately, Neville becomes engaged to his childhood sweetheart only to have Lily reappear.

Lily finds herself overwhelmed by the majestic home of her spouse. Even more difficult is for the commoner to adapt to his aristocratic family. While riding each morning, she realizes that she must leave her beloved because she is not good enough for him. He tries to persuade her otherwise, but she still leaves him and goes to London. However, someone wants Lily dead for no apparent reason and only Neville can keep his beloved safe, but she has left him to become a paid companion.

Award winning Mary Balogh is deservedly renowned for her best selling Regency romances that make the early nineteenth century seems as if the readers lived during the era. Her newest tale, ONE NIGHT FOR LOVE, lives up to the author's reputation and its own title as sub-genre fans will love this one night of reading. The characters are intriguing and the historical romantic suspense story line is entertaining. Ms. Balogh has another best seller to add to her excellent list.

5.0 out of 5 stars One More Extraordinary Story !, 18 Aug 1999
By A Customer
Mary Balogy has long been one of my favorite authors. Her stories generally combine some sort of "ugly duckling" type of character along with a mystery - but that doesn't convey the depth of her characterizations and the rich storytelling. Her heroines are sweet - but with a spine of steel often willing to forgo what they want for what they need, or must do. They have a strong sense of honor and obligation, right and wrong - and I love them for that. Her male characters are often Regency alpha males - but end up befuddled creatures uncertain how to deal with their feminine counterparts who do what they must.

Really rich storytelling combined with strong, true characters. Mary Balogh is an extraordinary writer who with every story gives us one more "Night of Love".

5.0 out of 5 stars Lovely as always.
Mary Balogh does it again with this ugly-duckling story that has a lot more depth that that implies. These characters have to work for their happy ending.
