2.0 out of 5 stars Ho hum same old same old, 3 Dec 2000
By A Customer
Once again, I could hear Georgette Heyer's shade weeping softly all over this book. Plot elements from The Convenient Marriage, and a tormented hero with a very contrived and foolish reason to be tormented. It is clear that he is modelled on the Byronic mould, but he ends up mouldy rather than moodily simmering with passion.

Many linguistic and psychological anachronisms mar this book, and the heroine is a wet leek with no real attractions - the customary "plain" features of a Heyer heroine, but none of the wit or wisdom. We keep being told how able a flirt she is, how attractive and sweet she is, and how her lovely nature captures the hearts and minds of the ton, but Spencer never actually shows this to us.

The only compelling character is the villainess, who seems to have even less reason for bitter twistedness than the hero, but at least is consistently nasty. But I cannot like a book where a woman who is demonstrating some independence of spirit and action is penalised by being a thoroughly unpleasant personality. In any case, the villainess seemed to come straight out of a US soap opera.

The central relationship was dull, the subsidiary characters simply there to set up the sequels and the action fairly limited, particularly by the heroine's abundant stupidity.

2.0 out of 5 stars Creepy, 26 May 1999
By A Customer
This book was disappointing. It went on far too long, the hero is pathological, and the heroine is a doormat for putting up with that kind of abusive behavior. Thoroughly disliked both characters. More interesting was a subplot with an American earl named Kerlain. Future book, I suppose.

5.0 out of 5 stars A dark, tortured hero meets his match, 9 Mar 1999
By A Customer
This is a terrific book if you like challenging, unusual heros instead of a more run-of-the-mill hero. The story isn't as humorous as the next book in the series, Lady's Wager, but I think the story is much more compelling and emotional, and the characters much more interesting. Lady Clara is a wonderful heroine, who teaches Lucky to trust and love again. This may not be the kind of love story for the faint of heart, but I loved it!!
