There are some books that can be read again and again and this is surely one of them! Johnny Harris is a sexy gorgeous hero who is trying to get his life together after being in prison for a crime he didn't commit. OK he's not perfect, but who is and who would be after ten years inside. The story flows and is full of believable characters. A must read.

2.0 out of 5 stars Give this one a miss., 6 Mar 2002
By A Customer
Pretty much unheard of me giving a Robard's novel only two stars but I found this novel way under her usual (read excellent) standard. In it's favour, Robards is Robards, she has so much talent that even at her worst she is readable, and no one can write a better love scene, but this is not one of her best.

Johnny Harris was convicted of murdering his high school sweetheart and sent to prison for ten years. Upon his release he writes to his former teacher Rachel Grant (five years his senior), who always believed in his innocence, for a job. Stepping of the Greyhound bus Rachel is confronted with an angry young man that far is different from the boy that she knew and before long sparks begin to fly.

I found the premise of this novel slightly off key. That the hero was convicted in the first place dispite the lack of evidence required a stretch of the imagination. That upon his release, proving his innocence or finding the true murderer was not a priority I had difficulty with. Returning to your home town, were the murdered girls family still live without the motive of finding justice was improbable. The romance is stilted, continuously trying to get over the imbalance of power that would exist between an ex-convict and his former teacher. The novel is suffocated with too much detail of old family farm houses long winded family history, in a failed attempt to paint a picture of southern mystic. And to top it all, there is a final twist for the sake of finding the culprit, that not only defies all logic but is tasteless and upsetting. All in all, a humourless, unromantic difficult and annoying read. Give this a miss and read "Walking after midnight" instead.
