5.0 out of 5 stars Strong start to a great series of books., 4 Dec 2001
By A Customer
For those who like their sci-fi set on a grand scale this is a satisfying introduction to a much overlooked series. Very entertaining stuff - would definitely recommend it to other space-opera fans.

3.0 out of 5 stars A slow start to a good series, 25 May 2000
By A Customer
The author introduces his characters and sets the stage for this series based in an overcrowded future ruled by an authoritarian Chinese dynasty. Most of the events have little apparent significance but the tale was stimulating enough to persuade me to buy the second book where the story really takes off. David Wingrove's chilling cultural backdrop is well crafted and populated with strange and memorable characters and the reader's loyalties are skillfully steered back and forth between the two sides of a ruthless political conflict.
