4.0 out of 5 stars A good 'follow-on' from the 'Famous Lives/Famous People' series, for an older child., 27 Nov 2006

(TOP 50 REVIEWER)
From the popular DEAD FAMOUS series of books Mary Queen of Scots and Her Hopeless Husbands.

`Mary started life at the top. She was queen of her own country at one week old, and queen twice over at 15 when her first hopeless husband became King of France.
A year later he died, leaving the tall, beautiful and charming Scottish Queen on her ownsome.
Read on and you can find out how the most desirable widow in Europe ended up going from one totally hopeless husband to another and how they helped her down the road to ruin............. '

208 pages dedicated to the tragic life of the Scottish Queen. Split into chapters:-

Introduction
Infant Queen
Over the Sea to France
Queen of France
The Wild West of Europe
Groupies, stalkers and suitors
Marry in haste, repent at leisure
And another hopeless husband
A Scottish Alcatraz
Guest of Her English Majesty
The final plot
Epilogue

Written in a variety of fonts with humorous black and white cartoon illustrations throughout, this is a good `follow-on' from the `Famous Lives/Famous People' series, for an older child.

5.0 out of 5 stars Mary Queen of Scots - an amazing woman, a wonderful book, 22 Oct 2002
By Merler Elena "elenahx" (Lago di Como - ITALY) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
Mary Stuart (or Stewart) was not so lucky... even if she was Queen of Scots... maybe you think be a Queen means you can do everything you want; no no no, you have a Reign to look after, you must follow the protocol (you can't go in public speeking and acting like any other human being - kings and queens have royal blood... this means it is not red or what? Oh yes, I remember, it is blue... bleah!) and most of the times you have to marry someone you even don't know or like, just beacuse of royal allies with foreign Reigns.

Now, maybe this was not the case of Mary because she quite liked her first husband, king Francis I of France, and the other two were her choises... but she was VERY unlucky in other ways... beeing imprisoned for 19 years is not a joke!

In this book you'll read about her 3 husbands, her escaping plots and you even can read her secret diary and the corrispondence she had with her cousin, Elizabeth I Queen of England and daughter of Henry VIII (yeah, the fat one).

Maybe the worst thing happened to Mary was to be Liz's hair in blood-line... and surprise surprise! it exactely ended in blood... to be a king or queen is really a dirty job!!

The book itself is beautiful, extremely well written and with tons of amazing illustrations by Philip Reeve (my fave illustrator after Martin Brown of the Horrible History Serie).

If you liked this book I recommend HENRY VIII AND HIS CHOPPING BLOCK and ELIZABETH I AND HER CONQUESTS for ancient history and AL CAPONE AND HIS GANG and ELVIS AND HIS PELVIS for modern history.

Elena - Italian reader
