Product Description

Product Description

You've probably heard of Joan of Arc... She's dead famous for leading the French army into battle, going up in smoke when she was burnt at the stake, and being an absolute saint. But have you heard that Joan was always having to prove she was'nt a witch, loved writing cheeky letters to very important people, and made the King of France look like a complete coward? Yes, even though she's dead, Joan's still full of surprises. Now you can get the inside story with Joan's secret diary, read the news that set France ablaze in The Gallic Globe, and find out exactly how a teenage girl gave an entire army its marching orders.

4.0 out of 5 stars A good historical read for an older child., 29 Nov 2006

(TOP 50 REVIEWER)
From the popular DEAD FAMOUS series of books `Joan of Arc and her Marching Orders`.

`Most people have heard of Joan of Arc, but why exactly is she dead famous? In fact, Joan started out as a very ordinary peasant girl.
She grew up working on her Dad`s farm and at first she didn't seem anything special at all. To get anywhere in her day, you really needed to be a man, and also rich - but Joan was neither of these things. And yet she ended up changing the course of her country`s history..........'

208 pages, split into chapters:

Introduction
Farmer Jacque's daughter
France in the wars
Joan at home
Arguing with angels
The adventure begins
Charlie and Joan
Joan's army
Maid in Orléans
The marauding Maid
Coronation chicken
Things go wrong
Things get worse
Caught
Joan alone
A beautiful trial
A horrible end
After Joan

Written in a variety of fonts with humorous black and white cartoon illustrations throughout, this is a good read for an older child.

5.0 out of 5 stars Effervescent Joan, 13 Sep 2002
I have read various works on Joan of Arc, from one of the earliest accounts from the fifteenth century by the German inquisitor and witch-finder Johan Nider to Frances Gies' magisterial 'Joan of Arc: The Legend and the Reality' . I have also enjoyed the novelization 'Personal Recollections of Joan of Arc' by Mark Twain. But I have never come across such a charmingly effervescent introduction to the peasant girl from Domremy as 'Joan of Arc and her marching orders' by Phil Robins . Touching upon virtually all of the salient points of her short and glorious life , Robins succeeds in being succinct as well as engaging and he does it with deft humour throughout. The text is further enhanced by the strong, punchy illustrations by Phillip Reeve. This entertaining account of Joan of Arc for children should be purchased immediately by parents and schoolteachers alike. Hopefully, children today will be so captivated they will go on in later years to read academic works such as 'Jeanne d'Arc' by Walter S. Scott, a rather more scholarly investigation into the Maid of Orleans.
