Product Description

Product Description
Amber's family think she's gone to Cornwall on holiday, but really she's left home. She's forging a new life - new housemates, new job and (with a little luck) new boyfriend. She feels bad because her mother and Poppy need her, but she's got to make the break, get out of their clutches... Then Amber falls ill and her family come to look after her. Something in the house responds to Poppy's presence, something malign and threatening. When Poppy moves into the attic, it gets even stronger, until evil seems to permeate everywhere and Amber thinks she might never be able to escape... A chilling and absorbing novel from a brilliant storyteller.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Haunting Thriller, 30 Aug 2006
Leaving Poppy is an intense psychological thriller that will stick in your mind long after you finish it. It is definitely one to read with as much of yourself tucked under the duvet as possible!

Meet Amber, a nervous, timid girl who, all her life has been put second best by her mother to keep her 'difficult' and overly sensitive half-sister Poppy happy. Because when Poppy is angry, things can get very, VERY ugly...

On the pretence of a fortnight's holiday in Cornwall before starting university, Amber creates a new life for herself, getting a job and moving into a student house, and slowly gains confidence and acceptance. Only, something about the house isn't quite right, the shadow on the staircase to the attic... and the mad old lady down the street who keeps asking questions. And she has yet to admit to her mother and Poppy that she isn't coming back.

However, Amber soon learns that it won't be so easy to escape Poppy's clutches...or whatever it is in the attic that seems to be drawing strength from her.

This stands out from the usual 'stalk and slash' teenage thrillers as a more sophisticated read, and is all the more terrifying for it. If, like me, you enjoy books that push your imagination with subtle hints of REAL horror,(as well as moments that will make your stomach churn) you won't be disappointed.

Well done, Kate.

3.0 out of 5 stars A Great Teenage Horror , 19 Jan 2009
By Miss Jessica (West Midlands,England) - See all my reviews
This is a great book for teenagers. Although, I think it will be enjoyed more by younger teenagers say between 13-16. I'm 18 and found it a very easy read. Good but very simple, so for me I've gave it three stars. However don't let this put you off if you're a younger reader. If I read this when I was a few years younger I'm sure I would have loved it and been raving about it to all my friends. All in all a great teenage horror.

5.0 out of 5 stars Gripping, totally believable and brilliant, 27 Mar 2007
By S. J. Merrett (Hampshire, England) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
This is one of Kate Cann's best, a gripping drama with a very creepy edge. From the first page I was drawn right into the story, and felt like the characters were living with me in my house, they were so real. The plot is so strong that throughout the whole book I couldn't wait to read on. The main character Amber is clearly suffering emotionally due to her mum and sister's weirdness, and this drives the whole story. In fact their relationship is so twisted that I wanted to give her mum a good slap. This is a brilliant story full of intense emotions and creepiness. It's very gripping, and you will love it.
