Synopsis

The Mages of Winding Circle Temple set out on adventures in the wider world...Some people fear Daja's power as a mage, and her ability to bind fire to her will. But, she's determined to enjoy herself in the snowy city of Namorn, making friends with her host's feisty twin daughters. Soon, she finds the twins are in need of her mage skills, however, and they're not the only ones. A heroic firefighter is desperate to protect the wood of his city from flames - but is his interest in Daja's power all it seems?

5.0 out of 5 stars I could not put it down!, 4 April 2002
Cold Fire is the third part of Tamara Pierce's latest quartet, The Circle Opens, and follows the highs and lows of Daja's experience as a teacher. Daja, first introduced in the Circle of Magic quartet, is visiting friends with her teacher Frostpine and is unexpectedly thrown in at the deep end as she grudgingly becomes a teacher to twins, Nia and Jory. However, Daja soon realises that knowledge is a gift that has to be shared and helps the twins as they begin their first steps into magic. As if teaching was not enough, Daja is caught up in a spate of fires where she has to use all her strength and power to save those in trouble. As she soon discovers things aren't always as they seem when she befriends Ben, a seemingly heroic man that helps Daja rescue those caught up in the fires. As with many of Tamara Pierce's books, there is a surprising twist which results in Daja and her new students being tested and leaves the reader surprised and shocked by the end result. Once again another great book by Tamara Pierce which will satisfy old fans and new readers alike.

5.0 out of 5 stars Cold Fire: Absolutely Brilliant!, 3 Nov 2002
I loved this book; it is a superb and surprising continuation of the Circle of Magic and The Circle Opens quartets and just goes to show that sequels aren’t always worse than the original. Though I’m most like Tris, the hot-tempered bookworm, Daja and Sandry have always been my favourite characters because they’re survivors who defied the odds and this book has made sure that Daja, at least, still remains my favourite. Tamora Pierce’s writing is as detailed and inventive as ever and I especially love the creation of Daja’s first language, TraderTalk. What else can I say? Can’t wait until the next book!
