Product Description

Product Description

Sir Frances Drake (1540-96) was a fearless explorer, a dashing sea hero, and the first Englishman to voyage around the world. In his later years he was chosen as the mayor of Plymouth, represents Bossiney in Parliament and finds fame as one of the great nava warriors of the Tudor period. Called 'El Draque', the dragon, by the Spanish, his status as national hero comes from the leading role he played in stopping the Spanish King's Armada invading England. There's no doubt his life has all the ingredients for creating a classic Dead Famous, and Andrew Donkin (author of Dahl, Shakespeare) is one of the best authors to do him justice.

4.0 out of 5 stars A good 'follow-on' from the `Famous Lives/Famous People' series, for an older child., 23 Jan 2007

A NEW book in the HORRIBLY FAMOUS (DEAD FAMOUS series of books, for the most part, re-badged):-
`Sir Francis Drake and his Daring Deeds`.

'You've probably heard of Sir Francis Drake.......
He is horribly famous for:-
Defeating the Spanish Armada, sailing right round the world, being a fearless explorer...., but......did you know that Drake:-
Got shot and didn't even realise it, went to sea in a pelican and was actually a bit of a pirate?
Now you can get the inside story with Drake's secret logbook, read some sensational news in `The Daily Drake' and re-live Drake's most daring deeds....`

176 pages, split into chapters:-

Introduction
Hello Sailor
Disaster at sea
How to steal a million
The age of discovery
All aboard
Island of blood
Where no (English) man has gone before
Stormy weather
The dragon
The Drake mystery
The homeward bounders
Drake in command
The dragon breathes
Fire
Invasion!
On the rocks
Last voyages

Written in a variety of fonts with humorous black and white cartoon illustrations throughout, this is a very good reference for an older child.

5.0 out of 5 stars Drake Dares! Good Deeds!, 24 Aug 2006

I've been a fan of the author Andrew Donkin for some time. His first contribution to this series on Roald Dahl was a wonderful and entertaining companion to my children's collection of Dahl's books. A must have if you're a fan.

The idea of a biography of an adult told in a way that relates to children is a great concept and with Drake, Donkin manages to inform and amuse in a way that the targeted young reader can genuinely relate to. This isn't the stuff of boring Friday afternoon's in the classroom. It's an immensely enjoyable piece. I picked it up straight after my daughter had finished reading it and we both loved it.

I'd recommend this highly. The Horribly Famous books are a great series and Donkin's second entry scores again.

What a great read. My little girl enjoyed it and we both learnt something as well! I can definitely recommend any book by this author. They are the Cbeebies of the book world. They keep your kids amused while teaching them at the same time.
