4.0 out of 5 stars A dazzling performance!, 24 Jul 2003
By A Customer
Martine Murray's brilliance, like any good acrobat, is to make the tricks look easy. In Cedar B Hartley, she mixes witty sketches and illustrations into a story about suburban kids who put on a tumbling show. Cedar B Hartley, the narrator with a vivid imagination, is warm-hearted and endearing. Though Cedar's home life is turbulent, her humour, imagination and bravado save the day. Martine Murray, a former circus artist and dancer, as well as a trained artist, delivers a really joyful performance in her debut novel. Yes, indeed Martine Murray is a huge talent. This debut novel has been shortlisted in major Australian children and youth fiction awards.Highly recommended for ages 10-14.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Brilliant fiction novel!, 11 Dec 2004
By A Customer
Martine Murray's brilliant fictional novel describes the life of a young teenage girl:cedar, she has dreams but when her precious dog stinky runs away and her brother travels to a different country, cedar meets an unusual but true friend-Kite.Kite is a professsional acrobat and together they both become the acrobrats!Cedar's character is one of a kind and the story is humourous and at the same time and brilliant book! Kite, cedar and a little help from their friends they put on a marvellous show as a favour for a neighbour.Recommended for 10-15.

5.0 out of 5 stars Simplistic brilliance, 4 Oct 2004
By Mr. Simon Paddon "Simon" (Barnstaple, UK) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
I was first drawn to this book by a review of it in the Times one Sunday. The reviewer, Philip Ardagh, describes it as 'perfect', so I really thought that I would make the effort to read it.

When I bought it, it was in the 'Young Adult' section of my local shop, and as my daughter is 10, I thought that I would check it out to see if it was suitable for her (well, that's my excuse).

So was I pleased that I made the effort? Yes, I am. It's a warm bath and glass of wine type of book, and really took me back to being 10, with the world and all it's oddities. Cedar is growing up with her Mum, her Dad having died, and older brother Barnaby having gone away. She meets a boy called Kite (cool name), and the book tells of their friendship, and their passion for acrobatics.

Wrote from Cedar's perspective, it is heart warming and thoughtful. To make me feel 10 again is great- seeing I am 35! I am now pestering my daughter to read it!

Make some time for you, and read this book- for you. It's worth it.
