My 9 year old daughter was very excited about this book series, but as a parent, I have been disappointed in the four books that I have read. Eleanor is no exception. This book contains several scenes which are disgusting -- a child who vomits up a ball of writhing worms, another child who has a worm come out of its eye (Eleanor calls for the doctor then watches as this worm fully emerges, as long as Eleanor's arm), a kitten falls down a privy chute and drowns, and Eleanor's sister writes a poem about this kitten's experience in her diary (mercifuly, the poem is not included in this book). While no doubt things like this happened in this time period, I felt these scenes did not add in any way to this book. When my daughter read the worms scene, she set the book aside and did not want to read any more of it. There are definitely better books for 8-11 year old girls to read.

Please do not allow the initial review of this book dismay, sway or discourage you. I have invested in this series of books and reaped the benefits. They are as entertaining as they are informative. It makes needed a change from the popular literature directed at children, which is useful and appreciated. I purchase various genres for my daughter, from 'shakespeare for children' to 'dora the explora'. I find it beneficial to introduce these historical pieces due to their educational, didactic and entertaining utilities. It is a wise decision to avoid blinding children from every aspect of negative life. When a child is introduced to something other than simply "sunsine and ponies" such as some of the tales contained in this book, if there is an explanation from the parent and a reassurance that these things can happen but do not worry and that they are safe, the child will develope with a stronger substance.
