wonderfully and lyrically illustrated classic story for all, 27 Jul 2001
"Gershon's Monster" is a traditional Hassidic legend, adapted here by Eric Kimmel. He neatly conceptualises both the content and the spirit of this ages old story set around Jewish New Year - Rosh HaShanah - and the theme of redemption (Yom Kippur, of course, which follows Rosh HaShanah, is very much concerned with confessing and forgiveness of sins). Like all the best tales, you don't have to share the same history to not only appreciate but be captivated by it; Eric Kimmel goes one better and includes some brief notes around the traditions and Jewish laws involved, as a welcome afterword. What makes it extra-special are Jon J Muth's lyrical and atmospheric illustrations. Muth is better known for his work on graphic novels for grown ups, and this story, like his other work, reminds us that many stories really are for children and adults alike. Although this is described in the Amazon listings as "reading age 4-8", please be assured this can be read and enjoyed by anyone with a reading age from four to eighty, and more. A visual treat, an enchanting tale, the perfect book! Malcolm Bourne
