It is sad that it should be unusual to find a children's book as beautiful as this. Patten's ode to the Earth which takes the form of an ABC, is sonorous and enchanting. The illustrations, by a collection of children's illustrators are truly beautiful, complemented by the illumination of each of the letters of the alphabet. The text is simple but contains some challenging vocabulary with a glossary at the back to help children understand. It's a shame that this book is no longer widely available - I just hope that there will soon be more like it.
